Madaba is 30 km south-west of Amman along the 5,000-year-old King's Highway and 20 km from Queen Alia International Airport. Christians consider the Madaba cluster an important part of the Holy Land, and the cluster contains 3 of the 6 Vatican-sanctioned pilgrimage sites in Jordan. Madaba's chief attraction, which lies in the contemporary Greek Orthodox church of St. George, is a wonderfully vivid, 6th century Byzantine mosaic map. This shows the entire region from Jordan and Palestine in the North, to Egypt in the South. Madaba is not just about mosaics. It possesses a varied resource base which attracts cultural tourists as well as religious, sports and adventure-minded visitors. Madaba also contains many other valuable attractions and resources. These include Ma’in hot springs, Mount Nebo, Dead Sea Panorama Centre, a mosaic crafts industry, a weaving industry, and several ancient structures and charming Ottoman-era buildings.
